Redefining Green IT

Amicus ITS has developed a six-step approach that will redefine green IT and produce a genuine return on green investment (ROGI)Hampshire based Amicus ITS, a leading business solutions provider and part of the Harmoni Group of companies has teamed up with environmental champion Carbon Footprint Ltd to help companies significantly reduce the harmful effects of global warming. The company has also officially launched its Green Business Solutions which provides organisations with a return on green investment (ROGI) through business technology solutions.

Working in partnership
The Southampton based company is the first IT firm to be appointed by Carbon Footprint Ltd.  Carbon Footprint partners businesses in environmental strategy development and management and is also a brand leader for consumer products and advice related to ‘low carbon’ lifestyles. It is an independent management owned business that has been operational since 2005.

Commenting on the partnership, John Buckley, Managing Director said: “We appointed Amicus ITS as our first Associate Company for IT, because its innovative approach focuses on the wider issue of making your business green through the use of IT, rather than focusing on IT alone."

“We are delighted to be recognised by Carbon Footprint for our commitment to providing solutions to the challenge of reducing carbon emissions. As managing director, I am very proud to be the first IT company to become an associate company,” said Steve Jackson, managing director of Amicus ITS.

A new approach
Amicus ITS has developed a six-step approach that it believes will redefine green IT and produce a genuine ROGI. The consultative model starts with a Green Audit and identifies direct cost-savings by analysing the key energy consuming functions within a business. These would typically include the powering of offices and equipment, transportation of goods and people and the production of equipment and consumables.

The company has already experienced great success working within both the public and private sectors with its Green IT solutions. The new approach includes the use of unified communications to reduce commutes and B2B travel whilst increasing effective communications between businesses. The company also recommends deploying energy efficient thin-client devices using virtual desktop infrastructure to reduce energy consumption and overheads.  In addition secure electronic messaging solutions are suggested to decrease costs and increase the speed and availability of information.

Amicus ITS reached the finals of the 2008 British Computer Society Industry Awards in December beating over 1,500 companies in a series of heats to be short-listed down to the last five. The company was a runner up for the BP Environmental Award after being recognised by the judges for its Green IT Solutions.

Commenting on Green Business Solutions, Steve Jackson, Managing Director of Amicus ITS said: “With energy costs increasing and with growing pressure for organisations to limit their emissions and adopt a more environmentally friendly attitude, we have devised a six phase approach that helps organisations reduce carbon footprints and also increase productivity and business continuity through technology solutions.”
