Local Government Group become an official partner to Race Online 2012

Group will promote the key role local authorities can play in supporting digital inclusion

The Local Government Group have become an official partner to Race Online 2012, which aims for the UK to become the first nation in the world where everyone has access to the internet.

An estimated 9.2 million people in the UK have still never surfed the web.
By becoming a Race Online 2012 partner, the LG Group will help work towards the campaign’s goal of 100 per cent internet participation by the end of next year.

The LG Group will promote the key role local authorities can play in supporting digital inclusion, highlight benefits for residents and councils and support local authorities by sharing different approaches and partnerships councils have developed to get more people online.

Councillor Chris White, Chairman of the Local Government Group's Culture, Tourism and Sport Board, said: "The digital revolution has transformed the way companies do business, the way people access information and the way in which public services are provided."

"It is vital that everyone can benefit from this and that people do not get left behind. Particularly in rural and deprived areas, councils will be playing a key role in ensuring that everyone has access to the wealth of information and support available online."
