GT speaks to Martin Wilson of Asset Bank about how best to manage, control, share and track digital assets.
What is Asset Bank?
Asset Bank enables organisations to create a fully searchable, categorised library of digital images, videos and other documents. It is used primarily for two purposes:
- Digital Asset Management: to manage, control, share and track digital assets.
- eCommerce: to sell digital assets online.
It is a server application implemented using web technologies, which means that all users need to use it is a web browser. This makes it simple to rollout, as almost everyone has a web browser these days, and ensures it can integrate easily with existing applications and intranets. Asset Bank can be installed on an organisation’s own server, for example on its office network or in a data centre, or we can provide hosting on our secure servers.
Asset Bank includes all the varied functionality you need to manage digital assets across a global organisation and yet it is very easy to use. We designed the user-interface to be simple and intuitive, as we know that image libraries and DAM (Digital Asset Management) systems are most often used and managed by
We customise the look and feel of Asset Bank to match an organisation’s website or intranet – this gives users a familiar experience, and ensures consistency of the brand. It can integrate with an LDAP server, such as Active Directory, for user authentication so that users don’t have to remember yet another username.
Which local government organisations have you worked with to date and can you give an example of what projects typically consist of?
We have implemented Asset Bank for many local government organisations, including: Aberdeenshire Council, Denbighshire County Council, Hertfordshire County Council, Kirklees Council, Lambeth Council, Merthyr Tydfil Borough Council and Wrexham County
Asset Bank is also used by public sector organisations such as London Fire Brigade, City of London Police and West Midlands Police.
For us, a typical project involves:
- Assessing and understanding the client’s specific requirements, to ensure that Asset Bank is a good fit.
- Helping the client plan how they want Asset Bank to be configured and used. This includes designing the ‘taxonomy’ for the library (the metadata fields and categories); working out access permissions (user, groups and access levels) and planning the processes and workflows for adding, finding and using assets.
- Installing and configuring Asset Bank on the server.
- Migrating existing images and other data from CDs, file systems and legacy applications into Asset Bank.
- Running one or more training sessions for admin users.
- Providing help and support after launch, when necessary.
Do you see a growing market in the Public Sector?
We do – there has been an explosion in the use of digital assets within organisations and those that have not yet implemented a DAM system are in danger of losing control. The issues affect both public sector organisations and commercial companies.
Over the next few years we expect almost all organisations to implement a DAM system – especially those in the public sector where sharing information and making the most of assets is critically important.
Do you offer consultancy services as well as a Project Management service?
Yes. We have been developing and implementing software applications for years and we find that this experience and expertise is invaluable for our clients. Also, finding and rolling out a suitable DAM system is only half the story – often clients need help planning the changes to their business processes as well.
We also provide custom-software development services, which enable us to customise Asset Bank to meet a client’s requirements exactly. This is important as although Asset Bank includes all the features you would expect from a DAM system there are always organisations that do things in a certain way and so have unusual requirements. A well-designed software application should be able to adapt easily to new requirements.
