Putting an end to data loss
In response to the ever-increasing amount of data lost from government organisations, XMA has launched a new website and put a specialist team in place to help tackle this issue

ImageAs more and more stories emerge about the theft or loss of sensitive data from government offices, identity theft has never been a more relevant concern which is why XMA has launched a new dedicated government website and put a new specialist team in place to help tackle these issues.

In July, a report by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) into the loss of data relating to Child Benefit described HM Revenue & Customs’ (HMRC) handling of sensitive data as "woefully inadequate".

HMRC also came under fire recently when details of thousands of pension plan holders were lost on a disc. And, worryingly, it’s not the only government department to hit the headlines. In other instances, details of millions of learner drivers went missing from the Driving Standards Agency and hundreds of budgeting loan applications containing personal details were lost by the Department of Work and Pensions. In addition, it is believed that hundreds of medical records have also gone astray from a number of health trusts across the UK.

Failing procedures
The IPCC's investigation uncovered failures in institutional practices and procedures concerning the handling of data. It revealed the absence of a coherent strategy for mass data handling and that, generally speaking, practices and procedures were less than effective.

The report stated that there was “a complete lack of any meaningful systems; a lack of understanding of the importance of data handling; and a ‘muddle through’ ethos”. Understandably, the pressure is now on to improve systems and procedures within the public sector.

In response, leading edge, specialist suppliers of IT products and services, XMA, has launched a new dedicated government website and put a specialist team in place to ensure that these organisations have access to products and solutions tailored specifically to this sector’s needs.

XMA, in partnership with BMS, a leading IT Security Solutions provider, offers a range of IT security solutions to protect an organisation’s data and IT infrastructure. Rob Taylor, XMA’s new Public Sector Sales Director commented: “We understand that all government organisations are under increasing pressure to meet the challenges of Efficiency Gains and Best-Value initiatives.
