Modems – “old hat” but still a real risk

ImageWith the widespread adoption of both broadband Internet connectivity and VoIP telephony, many organisations feel that modem dial-in access has become irrelevant.
Undoubtedly, its role in providing remote end-user access has diminished, replaced by secure VPNs. However, modem use by technical support staff remains widespread. Not only to support key IT systems, but also (increasingly) to maintain availability of critical elements of business infrastructure: telephony and voicemail; power management systems; even the network itself.

Cost pressures often dictate that many of these support functions are contracted out to third parties, removing them even further from internal security scrutiny.

With typically 1-1.5 per cent of all telephone lines configured for modem dial-in access, the security exposures are potentially huge. Doubly so considering that modems bypass firewall and intrusion detection controls.

At Xiscan we specialise in helping organisations quantify and manage these issues. We offer a range of telephony/modem scanning products and services, tailored to individual requirements.

Our software toolset (developed over ten years) can be licensed directly, supported by on-site training and configuration. Alternatively, we offer a range of managed audit packages. With audit experience encompassing well over a million calls, our customer base includes government, banking and finance, utilities and retail sectors.
