Data security gets the recognition it deserves
Attendance levels at the recent IA 08 conference indicates that top level executives are beginning to understand that personal data needs just as rigorous handling procedures as protectively marked data. However, there are challenges to managing data. Not just the questions of how and where it is stored, but how much data is required and for how long and who has access to it? These issues of data aggregation and lifecycle management require policies in place. Not only is a policy required, but also the procedures and tools for data handling, compliance and audit. Clearly it is important to enable shared services, so data should be protected in such a way that it is still easy to access for authorised recipients. Information that leaves direct control needs to have clear processes in place to protect it and ensure that the right person is authorised to receive and access it. Finally, the Data Handling Review has identified the need for products that allow the secure export of data, as well as the control of the data by the authorised recipient.
