Avoiding network and application response time problems
Life doesn't get any easier for IT Managers in the public sector facing new challenges to meet compliance policies in both security and performance, whilst introducing potentially money-saving new technologies such as VoIP, and, of course, keeping the users happy!
New time-critical applications are also affecting the performance of both networks and other applications using the same networks – the need to understand performance from a business applications point of view is greater than ever. Poor user response times are always reported as "the network's slow!" But it's not always the network's fault - it may be the server, the application itself, or an interaction between application and network. This is where a product called Network Physics NetSensory comes to the rescue, providing end-to-end analysis and reporting of real end-user performance and the underlying causes. One of the great strengths of NetSensory is automated reporting by individual application, user, group or location, or logical group such as a department or job function. Many performance problems can be avoided by pre-deployment testing of new applications and a useful product here is Packetstorm which provides a complete configurable “IP network in a box” so that applications can be tested against simulated “real world” network conditions.
